General Informations

BREAKDANCE belongs to the dance style Hip-Hop

FOOTWORK (or Downrocking) is used to describe any movement on the floor. Footworks are used as playful strengthening exercises.

Breakdance is a dance style that was originally danced on the streets. It emerged in the New Yorker boroughs Manhattan and the South Bronx in the early 1970s as part of the hip-hop movement. Breakdance is danced to pop, funk or hip hop and combines acrobatic movements (that often require athletic skills) and fast sequences of steps. Equally important is the style and the originality of the set (sequence of steps).

Helpful prerequisites:

  • Experience with movement and music
  • Examples from the category: „Short Dances"

Tips for implementation:

  • Don`t work on footwork, freezes or power moves for too long - always mix them up with movements performed standing up (take the strength conditions of the students into consideration)
  • Different forms of organisations add variety and take some pressure off the teacher as the "presenter".
  • Play some music during the practice phase (motivation). The sound volume can be varied.
  • Putting together 2-3 movements can already result in a small combination suitable for a class

Further steps:

  • Different footwork can be used to connect toprocks and drops. students may present a short sequence or a freestyle dance move alone or in teams or in a b-buying circle (toprocks, drop/go down and freeze can also be found in the breakdance category) and end the sequence with a "freeze". They may also integrate a power move.

Tips relating to the music: further information can be found under the heading „Tips & methods“ > Music

  • For this example, several different music pieces are suitable. A clear rhythm with between 75 - 110 beats per minute (BPM) is helpful.
  • Good, motivating music is very important. Use songs that are currently popular every now and then. Bring faster and slower music to the lesson. These add variety and motivation to lessons.
