General Informations

BREAKDANCE belongs to the dance style Hip-Hop

FREEZES are also used as playful strengthening exercises. FREEZES are poses which the dancer adopts (he/she remains in the pose for a short time trying to look as impressive as possible) to either conclude his/her sequence of steps (set) or to emphasize certain parts of the music.

Breakdance is a dance style that was originally danced on the streets. It emerged in the New Yorker boroughs Manhattan and the South Bronx in the early 1970s as part of the hip-hop movement. Breakdance is danced to pop, funk or hip hop and combines acrobatic movements (that often require athletic skills) and fast sequences of steps. Equally important is the style and the originality of the set (sequence of steps).

Helpful prerequisites:

  • Experience with movement and music
  • Exercise for core stability/tension to prepare students for mini acro

Tips for implementation:

  • Don`t work on footwork, freezes or power moves for too long - always mix them up with movements performed standing up (take the strength conditions of the students into consideration)
  • Different forms of organisations add variety and take some pressure off the teacher as the "presenter".
  • Play some music during the practice phase (motivation). The sound volume can be varied.

Further steps:

  • Students may create their own „freeze“ and movements and show them to each other.
  • students may show their toprocks in a circle and may combine it with a freeze or footwork

Tips relating to the music: further information can be found under the heading „Tips & methods“ > Music

  • For this example, several different music pieces are suitable. A clear rhythm with between 75 - 110 beats per minute (BPM) is helpful.
  • Good, motivating music is very important. Use songs that are currently popular every now and then. Bring faster and slower music to the lesson. These add variety and motivation to lessons.
